During the 2017-2018 winter season
Ken and Deb will be taking a few months off from travel. During this respite at Base Camp, we hope to connect with some of our northern RV friends who enjoy the warmth of Texas each winter. Our Base Camp "campground" is OPEN! In the meantime, to our traveling friends, "Keep the shiny side up, and the rubber side down!"

[Ken 11/01/2017] It was the end of a long trip. I was tired. It was dark. I knew better. But I chanced it anyway.

Faith is just over forty feet long. In spite of her massive size, she is pretty easy to drive and quite agile in tight spaces. It's easy to get over-confident. This time, I turned the big steering wheel just a little too much. We were pulling into our spot at Base Camp in Livingston, TX. We had a place prepared for our stay, but on this evening I pulled a little farther forward in order to get an assuring angle on the parking spot under the darkening evening sky. There is a large oak tree behind and I always want to be able to see how close I might be getting.

In earlier pictures of our Base Camp you may recall having seen a row of tree stumps along the street. The good news is that they are all gone ... now. The bad news is that I took one of them out by scraping the side of Faith against it. A tree stump scraping against the side of a motorhome makes an awful sound. Fortunately, the damage was contained on just one basement compartment door.
A few days later a man in a cowboy hat came by with a diesel-powered, whirring machine. He used it to grind up all of what was remaining of the evil stump. He and his grinding machine made all of the old stumps disappear, in fact.

| Winnebago had a replacement door panel -- they were kind enough to over-night it to us. A quick stop by the local RV body shop and the old door was off and the new door was installed. Of course, it is not the right color, so we will have to get it painted. We hope to get that done by Christmas. A very expensive lesson was learned: If you want to position a 40-foot motorhome in the dark, you should first call a man in a cowboy hat who has a diesel-powered, whirring machine. | |
